It's the time of year for people across the globe to start taking Valtrex, a popular antiviral drug that was first approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But what's the real deal?
"The real deal is, the cost of it has nothing to do with the fact that it is used," says, an assistant professor at Harvard University who has researched Valtrex and has studied other drugs for Valtrex.
For those with health insurance, Valtrex is usually covered by the insurer's deductible. The insurer pays for Valtrex out-of-pocket, which can cost you $20 to $100 per month. You can take the medication in your own name, and you'll still need to pay for Valtrex.
Valtrex is the most common form of medication, used to treat herpes, cold sores, and shingles. However, Valtrex is not the only form of medication that is prescribed for herpes. A new study, published in the
Journal of Sexual Medicinefound that patients who took Valtrex for more than a year were four times as likely to develop a cold sore as those who took a placebo.
"What's the evidence to support the new findings?" says Dr. Steven K. Schulman, associate professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, and director of the Center for Sexual Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.
"It's important to note, that Valtrex can be used in the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. It's also used in the prevention and treatment of herpes simplex virus types 2 and 1."
In the study, the researchers studied 1,000 patients who were diagnosed with herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 in the United States, including those who were taking Valtrex for at least a year. They also took a placebo for one year.
Of the 1,000 patients, half were treated with Valtrex for one year. The other half were treated with placebo. The researchers found that those who took Valtrex were 4 times more likely to develop a cold sore, as compared to those who took a placebo.
"It's important to note that Valtrex is used in the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections," says Dr. Stephen G. Smith, a professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco.
"The primary goal of treatment with Valtrex is to prevent infection, which means that you'll have to take it in order to prevent an outbreak or infection. But the use of Valtrex in the treatment of cold sores is very different from the use of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and shingles virus (HSV-2). It's a different virus, and treatment with Valtrex is still effective for the treatment of shingles, but it can be used to prevent the infection, which is a cold sore. It's also important to know that Valtrex is not used to treat genital herpes or the herpes simplex virus (HSV), or for genital herpes.
"People who have herpes can be very vulnerable to the virus that causes them. If you do experience a cold sore and don't have symptoms, it's not worth taking Valtrex," says Dr. John S. Miller, a urologic professor at Johns Hopkins University, and lead researcher on the study. "If you take Valtrex for a short time, you may be more likely to develop a cold sore."
Valtrex is available in generic versions. You'll need to speak with your doctor about which one is right for you.
If you have a prescription for Valtrex, you'll need to fill out a questionnaire, which can include questions about your medical history, allergies, and any other medications you're taking. A doctor can ask about your current health, medications, and allergies, and you'll need to fill out a medical history form.

“We advise consumers to avoid taking any prescription drugs that contain the main ingredient in the drugs, and to inform their doctor and pharmacist about all their prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, as well as any drugs that contain prescription drugs that are available without a prescription.”
